Yes — British citizens will need ETIAS from late 2026

Following Brexit, British nationals are no longer EU citizens. From late 2026 all British passport holders will require an ETIAS authorisation before travelling to Europe — including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, and all other Schengen Area countries.

What is ETIAS for British citizens?

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a new mandatory pre-travel requirement introduced by the European Union. For British citizens it replaces the freedom of movement that existed before Brexit. It is not a visa — it is an electronic travel authorisation that must be obtained online before you travel.

The ETIAS is valid for three years and covers all Schengen Area countries. You will not need a separate authorisation for each country you visit during your trip.

Which European countries require ETIAS?

British citizens will need ETIAS to visit all Schengen Area countries and associated nations. This includes all the most popular European holiday and business destinations — France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, and many more.

Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area and British citizens do not need ETIAS to visit Ireland.

Frequently asked questions

Do British citizens need ETIAS after Brexit?
Yes. Since Brexit, British nationals are no longer EU citizens and no longer have the right to free movement in Europe. From late 2026 all British passport holders will need an ETIAS to visit Schengen Area countries for short stays.
When will British citizens need ETIAS?
ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. Until then British citizens can continue to visit Europe without any pre-travel authorisation, subject to the 90-day in 180-day rule that already applies post-Brexit.
Is ETIAS a visa for British citizens?
No. ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorisation — a much simpler, cheaper, and faster process than a traditional visa application. It is applied for entirely online and most applications are approved quickly.
How much does ETIAS cost for British citizens?
The official EU fee for ETIAS is €7 for applicants aged 18 to 70. British citizens under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee. ETA Permits charges a service fee for handling and reviewing your application.
Can British children travel to Europe without ETIAS?
Children under 18 will still require their own ETIAS linked to their own passport, but they are exempt from the €7 EU fee. Parents can apply on behalf of their children through ETA Permits.
Does ETIAS cover all of Europe for British citizens?
One ETIAS covers all Schengen Area countries — over 30 European destinations. You do not need a separate ETIAS for each country you visit. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area and does not require ETIAS.
